Day Three Hundred & Fifty-Six

I know a big hold up for believing in a loving God for many people is this question of, “If God is so loving, how come terrible and horrible and evil things happen? Why doesn’t He just stop them/intervene?”
At times I’ve been unsure how to answer this question and have even pondered it myself.
I realized recently, however, that all the prophets are right when they say that Jesus Christ is the answer.
God can be a loving God even though bad things happen because of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ can right all wrongs. He can fix the unfixable. He can heal the unhealable. He can right the unrightable. Because of His infinite atonement and everlasting grace, all things can be made right.
That’s how.
That’s how God can (still) be loving EVEN THOUGH bad things happen.
I don’t know how it’s done, but that’s not my job to know. My job (and your job) is to have faith in the Savior who can do the impossible and make things right. Our job is to believe, to have hope, and to trust.
I know bad things happen. Unfair things. Horrible things. Terrible things. Evil things. But I also know that God is loving. He is kind. He is benevolent. He is all that is good.
Both of those things can be true at the same time because Jesus Christ performed the atonement.
That brings me peace.

24 He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world; for he loveth the world, even that he layeth down his own life that he may draw all men unto him. Wherefore, he commandeth none that they shall not partake of his salvation.
My wonderful friend that edits these asked me, “My question basically is, because Jesus Christ performed the atonement, is that why bad things are able to happen? And they will eventually be resolved because of that atonement?”
Here’s my rambling answer haha:
Bad things don’t happen because of the Atonement. They happen because of free agency and mortality. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is what makes it possible for all of that to be healed and made right.
Both things can be true at the same time (there is suffering and God is good) because, once again, we believe that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, everything will be made right.
God does not intervene to stop bad people from doing bad things. As in, He doesn’t exert his omnipotence to stop them from making that decision. That would be going against free agency.
Free agency and living in a fallen world is why bad things sometimes happen, and the Atonement of Jesus Christ is the solution.
God sent Jesus Christ to perform the Atonement of Jesus Christ to do two really important things:
1- Experience every single thing of mortality— every individual’s suffering in order to be a perfect empathizer and one day a perfect advocate
2- To atone for our sins.
We believe that God has to follow the laws of the universe, and two of those laws He has to follow are the law of justice and the law of mercy. To ensure justice will prevail AND mercy will be present, the Atonement of Jesus Christ bridges that gap and makes it possible.
Then, through individuals’ choice to repent and become a new creature in Christ, they can live with God and Christ again someday (there’s more nuance and complexity, but that’s the simple version).
I’m so grateful for the gospel of Jesus Christ in my life.
